Savannah has always held a special place in my heart. From the enchanting Spanish moss that adorns the city to the fresh seafood and rich history, there’s always something new to discover.
I’ve compiled some of the best restaurants, attractions and local secrets from an overnight trip I took with my husband, perfect for a casual weekend getaway.
Our trip kicked off early on a Saturday morning and was a quick four-hour drive. We wanted to make the most of our limited time, so we started the day with brunch at The Collins Quarter at Forsyth. This establishment has an incredible vibe and is located in the historic Forsyth Park. My dish of choice was the Mushies on Toast, which featured a sherry-braised mushroom medley, a poached egg, ricotta lemon spread, pickled mustard seeds and Aleppo pepper on multigrain. I paired this savory plate with their sweet taro latte for the perfect brunch combo.
After brunch, we had some time before checking into our hotel and decided to walk over to Colonial Park, a historic cemetery. This one in particular operated from 1750 to 1853. Along the east side of the wall, you’ll notice that it’s embedded with a collection of headstones. A local who heard me question this strange site stopped and shared its unique backstory with me! During the Civil War, Union Soldiers occupied the cemetery and destroyed a large portion of the plots. As a way to honor those lost plots, the city arranged the headstones along the wall.
We still had some time to kill before checking into our hotel and found The Book Lady Bookstore. This independent bookstore has an impressive collection of pre-used, rare and new reads. I can never leave a bookstore empty handed so I found a novel from a local author and some poetry by Ted Hughes. Along the way back to the car, we stopped by The Coffee Fox Roasting Co., where I got a delicious brown sugar matcha. Across from the coffeeshop is Element Tree Essentials that specializes in handcrafted products, crystals and local art. With a few souvenirs in hand, including a Spanish moss car diffuser, we headed to our hotel to check in.
For this trip, we stayed at the Municipal Grand Hotel, a 44-room boutique hotel that resides in the 1961 First Federal Savings and Loan Association building. It’s been completely renovated with a mid-century chic vibe. Inside, baby blue tiles and rich emerald green adorn the decor. Upon check-in, we received a complimentary cocktail and a set of physical keys to our room, which added a fun touch to our stay. Once we got settled and recharged, we headed over to The Crab Shack on Tybee Island for an early dinner. This eclectic restaurant offers incredible views of the water, fresh seafood dishes and is home to some friendly stray cats that roam outside. For our meal, we went all out with snow country boils that completely satisfied our seafood craving.
As the sun began to set, we headed back to the hotel and took in the sunset views over the bridge back to Savannah. While I would prefer to spend more time in Savannah, this trip was exactly what we needed to enjoy a fun escape from the daily grind.
