Meeting the Makers of Thomasville
BY Peter Bowen

My wife and I have  traveled to many Georgia towns over the years, but none combine creativity, craftsmanship, and Southern hospitality like Thomasville.

I think most people travel to this place seeking historic architecture, beautiful gardens, and great dining. While all these do exist in Thomasville, we were pleasantly surprised by the maker culture. Artists, craftspeople, brewers, cheesemakers, and entrepreneurs alike were adding their own special flavor to the visitor experience.

We began our journey in Thomasville at Sweet Grass Dairy (one of the state’s top artisanal food producers). We tasted some of Sweet Grass’ award-winning cheeses while learning about the people and tradition behind it. A small family venture that has grown to national recognition, Sweet Grass Dairy still maintains a strong connection to the community that helped it grow.

Just a five-minute drive later, we discovered another side of Thomasville’s creative spirit. The Thomasville Center for the Arts presents exhibitions featuring local and regional art, as well as providing educational programs to help cultivate new generations of artists. The Center is a haven for creativity, both displayed and encouraged.

One of our favorite discoveries was The Fuzzy Goat. This fiber arts shop felt like a combination of a creative studio and community center. They sell a variety of colorful yarns along with directions for knitting and crocheting. Over in the shop’s corner, we heard several of the regulars, who were seated on overstuffed couches, discussing their projects, their fingers and knitting needles creating row after row of colorful scarves, sweaters, etc. Fast production times make handcrafting and patience so desirable today.

South Life Leather was next on our agenda. There’s nothing like experiencing the smell of highquality leather goods, crafted with techniques and skill one can only perfect by doing. Each piece produced by South Life is representative of the creator and buyer. That is the exact type of authentic experience travelers desire.

Blake Candle Company welcomed us before we walked in. Fresh citrus, warm vanilla, cedar, and lavender drifted out of the entrance. Inside the store, we found rows of hand-crafted candles poured in small batches. Each was inspired by either a Southern season or a quiet evening spent at home.

We didn’t know quite what to expect when we arrived at Bull & Briar, but the shop has a knack for blending Southern style with modern craftsmanship. From quality apparel and leather accessories to carefully selected gifts, everything feels intentionally chosen rather than simply stocked on a shelf. You’ll naturally slow down while browsing Bull & Briar, admire the craftsmanship and ultimately find something you didn’t know you needed.

While Harden’s Taxidermy may not be part of your typical tour itinerary, it should be. When we entered the shop, we immediately had a deeper understanding of the process involved in combining artistic skills with scientific knowledge, patience and incredible focus on detail. Hours went into creating each mount. Whether you are an avid outdoorsman or simply curious, seeing the amount of expertise that goes into replicating nature is awe-inspiring. We quickly realized Harden’s Taxidermy wasn’t just a business, it’s a workshop where time-honored craftsmanship continues to flourish.

Thomasville’s creative spirit extends far beyond traditional crafters. As local breweries and wineries continue to pop up around the nation, Thomasville has followed suit. Tvelo Brewing Co. produces exceptional beer in Thomasville. Additionally, Farmer’s Daughter Vineyard gives visitors the opportunity to sample Georgia-produced wines while educating them on farm practices used to support its vineyards.

Along Broad Street, multiple shops offer a wide range of handcrafted items, antiques, and carefully curated collections. The Hare & The Hart, Toscoga Marketplace, CH Whitney Antique & Art Store, and other similar establishments in downtown Thomasville offer visitors so much more than shopping. They provide insights into design, history and the collectors that curate rare collectibles and one-of-a-kind treasures.

Visiting Thomasville during one of its artisan market days or attending the annual Rose Show & Festival allows visitors to interact with the artisans and creators themselves, as well as purchase items created by those same individuals.

Each establishment we visited represented many aspects of what we enjoyed about Thomasville itself. It’s sophisticated without being pretentious. Welcoming regardless if you visit for the weekend or live here your entire life. It serves as a reminder that the arts, unique shops, and food are real and necessary experiences.

The unplanned stops often leave the greatest impression. Thomasville has a knack for surprising you, which adds to its appeal. What we appreciated most about the city center was how easily accessible this experience. Within a three-block area, visitors can meet a cheesemaker, discuss art with an artist, taste a locally-brewed drink, and purchase a handmade treasure to take back home.

Thomasville isn’t just somewhere you go; it’s somewhere you experience. For someone wanting to learn about who creates things, Thomasville may be the most unforgettable aspect of its attractions.
