Blake Guthrie

Georgia is my jam. I’ve lived here since the early 1990s, coming from Alabama with a guitar

on my knee and pen in hand. Since then, I’ve written about destinations around the state

for numerous regional and national outlets such as the TODAY Show, Matador Network, USA

Today and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

WHAT’S YOUR TRAVEL STYLE?

“Casual, low-key and often last-minute when I find a good deal. There’s always a duffel bag

packed next to my bedroom door. I prefer retro roadside motels where I can park my car

directly in front of the room. Valet parking is a huge turn-off for me, probably because I

once had a car wrecked by a teenaged valet parking attendant.”

WHAT GEORGIA SPOT FEELS LIKE ‘HOME’ TO YOU?

“I’ve lived in Athens, Decatur and Lake Country, so these places will always feel special. A

place I haven’t lived that feels like home is the North Georgia Mountains in and around

Rabun County where I’ve spent so much time. Those are my mountains.”

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU ALWAYS DO WHEN YOU TRAVEL?

“I’ll turn the question around and tell you what I never do when traveling: turn on the news.

At home, I can be a news junkie, but when I’m on the road for fun, I keep the news at bay.”
